On behalf of the faculty of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Idaho State University, I would like to thank you for visiting our home page.
The history of civil engineering education at ISU dates back to 1902 when the two of the first four graduates of “the Academy of Idaho” were Civil Engineers. Only Associate degrees were offered for many years. Following a series of radical changes, however, ISU began offering the Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering along with Electrical and Mechanical Engineering in May 2001. Also, in 1999, a Master of Science program in Engineering Structures and Mechanics was implemented. In addition to an ABET accredited undergraduate program, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering offers M.S. degree programs in Engineering Structures and Mechanics, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science and Management, and an interdisciplinary Ph.D. degree in Engineering and Applied Sciences.
Some of the unique features of our department include dedicated and experienced faculty and supportive staff, outstanding students, small faculty-student ratio, higher than national average Fundamental of Engineering (FE) Examination passing rate, strong cross-disciplinary collaboration, and excellent career placement. The college of Engineering is going through significant changes as we are transforming from primarily an outstanding “teaching” program into a high-level research institution. ISU is a mid-size university with a student population of less than 13,000. Pocatello, the home of ISU, is located in the Southeast corner of Idaho. With an approximate population of 52,000, known as the “Gateway to the Northwest,” Pocatello has been recognized as a “Best Small Place for Business” by Forbes.com five years in a row.
We are proud of our heritage and excited about the future prospects. This is an exceptionally vibrant time in the history of ISU and the College of Engineering under the leadership of President Vailas and Dean Jacobsen. Our department strives to become a premier Civil and Environmental Program among peer institutions in the nation and the world.
